How might we

Empower immigrants in our community?

We build access through English language learning, educational equity, and holistic instruction that are rooted in our understanding of the hopes and aspirations that bring families to New York City.
How might we

Equip our communities
to flourish?

By providing opportunities to build confidence and proficiency through adult English courses and after-school tutoring, we listen to learn how to support and amplify our students’ gifts.
How might we

Love our neighbors?

In working to honor our community and be worthy of trust, we serve each person with excellence, provide encouragement and affirmation, and treat everyone with respect, dignity, and kindness.

Carin Fredere

A Very Short History

Carin and James Fredere began teaching a handful of adult English language learners on Hillside Avenue in the fall of 2015 and launched the first Summer Kids Club the following year. Students from our early years of tutoring are all in high school or beyond now. Hillside Center of Education has grown with our old families and incorporated new ones to create a flourishing community. Over the years and changes in our organization, neighborhood, and city, the one thing that stays the same is the commitment of Hillside Center to supporting and loving our neighbors well. We are thankful to have been planted here, love that our name reflects our roots, and look forward to continued growth with our community.

“Connecting with South Asian women through the Hillside center goes deeper than English lessons and conversations. I’m so thankful for the opportunity to discuss cultural insights, faith, and the joys and challenges of life. Hillside has fostered a safe environment to learn and develop and I look forward to many more years volunteering here."

“To witness James & Carin’s work with the families from the beloved Hillside Center for Education community, is to experience what it means to be a part of a family and truly be seen for all aspects of one’s identity. It is my privilege and joy to learn from these community leaders.”

“Hillside Center is a safe friendly environment where students advance and reach their goals mentally, academically, socially, and more. At Summer Kids Club, children have the opportunity to expand their social skills, and it allows them to learn lessons that they can use as they strive for excellence.”
